"The exercising of weapons putteth away aches, griefs, and diseases, it increaseth strength and sharpeneth the wits, it giveth a perfect judgment, it expelleth melancholy, choleric, and evil conceits, it keepeth a man in breath, in perfect healthe, and long life." – George Silver (1599)

Although the movies make it look cool, you really want to a saber grip on a knife, not a icepick. The other way loses the ability to thrust plus you are bereft the length of the knife and since an icepick grip generally makes you strike with hooks you also lose the length of the forearm.

Thanks Miles!
